ADHD Therapy

Is It Becoming Increasingly Difficult For You To Live In A Neurotypical Society?

Do you have—or suspect you have—a neurodivergent diagnosis like autism or ADHD?

Are symptoms of anxiety, physical discomfort, and lack of concentration making it difficult for you to focus on your work, hobbies, or relationships?

Do you regularly feel overwhelmed by your responsibilities and/or environments?

For many people with neurodivergence or learning difficulties, maintaining focus and organization is a daily struggle. Whether they are routinely running late, missing appointments, losing things, or simply feeling too overwhelmed to function, these individuals often experience the sensation of their lives “piling up,” making their daily tasks and responsibilities even more stressful.

If you or your child has a diagnosis of autism, ADHD, a learning disability, or other neurodivergent diagnosis, you are likely encountering a lot of frustration with yourself, your abilities, and your relationships. Feeling like the world wasn’t made for you is an isolating experience that introduces a cycle of shame and self-criticism. In reality, you are doing nothing wrong—you just need new and individualized skills for coping, communicating, and managing life’s demands.

Are You Concerned That ADHD Or A Similar Diagnosis Was Overlooked When You Were Younger?

On the other hand, it’s possible you are an adult who has never received an official diagnosis but nevertheless feels “different” from your neurotypical peers. Maybe you struggle with tasks that seem to come easily to others, or perhaps your friends, family, and coworkers have hinted that your communication is often ineffective. As awareness of such issues as ADHD and autism has increased, you may suspect that certain symptoms were overlooked in your childhood or that you’ve developed these challenges as an adult.

No matter your experience, our therapists are passionate about creating an inclusive, nonjudgmental atmosphere where you can explore and overcome life’s struggles. Working together in therapy for ADHD and other similar issues, we can help you gain confidence and empowerment so that you can manage symptoms as they arise.

Neurodivergence Exists On A Spectrum And Affects Us All At Some Point Or Another

Despite the fact that a lot of advancements have been made in the field of neurodivergence, there remains a lot of misunderstanding in our culture of what conditions like ADHD are and how they affect the brain. The truth is that these issues exist on a spectrum, impacting individuals in a variety of ways based on their age, relationships, past experiences, and the structural supports available to them.

Unfortunately, instead of viewing daily challenges as reflective of an inflexible neurotypical society, neurodiverse teens and adults often blame themselves for their perceived shortcomings. They can also experience a lot of shame and embarrassment when asking for accommodations at work or school.

It’s easy to feel like a burden when the world around you seems to function one way, and you function in an entirely different way. Especially in a culture that so deeply values busyness and multitasking, it is alienating to constantly fall short of success and acceptability. However, therapy offers you an opportunity to learn and develop the language needed to get your needs met. Our therapists will work with you to identify the main challenges posed by your ADHD diagnosis, give you the necessary skills for coping, and learn to utilize the strengths you possess in a way that will make your life more satisfying and manageable.

Therapy Allows You To Identify And Embrace The Unique Strengths And Perspectives ADHD Has Afforded You

One of the central philosophies we apply in therapy for ADHD and similar conditions is that there really is no “normal” way for a brain to work. Neurodivergent or not, all of us possess both strengths and weaknesses that affect our life experience. Our goal in therapy is to help you verbalize your unique experience of the world in a way that will offer meaningful insight and solutions to the setbacks created by autism, ADHD, and other diagnoses.

At Jessica Bolden Psychotherapy Group, we are a team of clinicians who specialize in the treatment of ADHD and similar conditions for teen and adult clients. If you or your child have severe symptoms or require a specific intervention not available through our practice, we are happy to refer you elsewhere for services better suited to your needs. What To Expect

Using elements of mindfulness and behavioral approaches, we aim to help you or your child cope and self-regulate as symptoms arise. As you learn more in counseling about how conditions like ADHD affect the brain’s networks, you can facilitate a deeper awareness of the why behind your challenges and how to make small accommodations in your life that will yield big results.

We also maintain a heavy focus on skills in treatment. For instance, we know that ADHD often presents as issues with organization and focus, so therapy will be designed to help implement reminders and other tools to make tasks smoother and more feasible. You are also likely to learn internal stress management strategies that will aid in reducing impulsivity and emotional reactivity.

Finally, therapy is a chance to learn meaningful communication and boundary-setting skills for navigating life with autism, ADHD, and learning difficulties. We will empower you to identify and assert your limits as you develop meaningful strategies for asking for what you need.

Just because you struggle with neurodivergence, it does not mean you’re lazy, incompetent, or unworthy of support. Issues like ADHD and autism are very real, and they can significantly impact daily functioning and relationships. Though it’s discouraging to try to fit yourself into a world that doesn’t operate the way you do, it is possible to shape your world in a way that makes sense for you.

Common Concerns About Therapy For ADHD Specifically…

Is medication part of ADHD treatment?

Though our therapists believe that medication can be a very effective tool in treatment for ADHD, medication is not right for everyone, and it doesn’t fix everything. If you are curious about combining ADHD medication with therapy, then we are happy to refer you to a prescribing professional who can help.

That said, we will never pressure you to take medication. There are a lot of ways that counseling can meaningfully help you address challenging symptoms of ADHD.

Isn’t ADHD being over-diagnosed?

It’s less likely that ADHD is being over- or mis-diagnosed and more likely that we’re coming to a more nuanced understanding of neurodivergence as a society. In essence, many of us are finding that neurodivergence affects us in one way or another, whether it manifests as anxiety, learning differences, or issues with executive functioning.

ADHD is better understood now than it ever has been, making it easier to recognize and diagnose. It’s also important to remember that a vast majority of us will encounter symptoms of ADHD sooner or later—ADHD is only considered a disorder if and when symptoms impact daily functioning and wellbeing.

Is ADHD treatment a confidential process?

Our clinicians understand that teens, in particular, may shy away from receiving therapy for ADHD because they are afraid that their therapist will disclose sensitive information to their parents. However, we aim to make counseling for ADHD a supportive, transparent process, and we will always discuss limits of confidentiality before starting therapy.

The main reason we would ever disclose information to parents is if a teen client expresses a desire to hurt themselves or others. Otherwise, sessions are confidential, private, and designed to place the client at the center of the treatment process. If there is a need to bring a parent in the loop, we will always discuss it with our teen client first.
